Bio

Jazz Legacy Productions recording artist and GRAMMY winner  (Alicia Keys’ Superwoman) Michael Dease is a rising star in New York’s City’s jazz scene. Dease’s trombone can be heard with many excellent bands, including the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, Charles Tolliver Big Band, Roy Hargrove Big Band, Mark Whitfield Quartet, Claudio Roditi Quintet, The WAITIKI 7, and others. He is a lecturer at Northeastern University and teaches privately in New York City and Boston.

In just seven years in New York City, Dease has recorded over forty albums as a sideman and performed in every major jazz venue, including the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Iridium, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Jazz Standard and Smalls.  Dease released his third album to date in 2008, “Clarity” (Bluesback) to critical acclaim.  A creative and efficient record producer, Dease has assisted with releases for Half Note Records and Jazz Legacy Productions.  In the spring of 2009, Dease launched D Clef Records with the auspicious debut of trumpeter-composer Thomas Barber and his eclectic orchestra, Janus Bloc.

Dease received the Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from The Juilliard School.  He has conducted clinics at several colleges and universities- including Augusta State University, Broward College, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, Scranton University and Simpson College.  A committed educator, many of Dease’s students have received top awards and admission into competitive conservatory degree programs, such as The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music and Florida State University.  

Dease’s career has been distinguished by professional performing and recording credits alongside musicians like Lewis Nash, James Moody, Roy Hargrove, Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Billy Harper, Reggie Workman, Stanley Cowell, Nasheet Waits, Mark Whitfield, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Slide Hampton’s World of Trombones, Wycliffe Gordon, Paul Simon, Alicia Keys, Jamie Cullum and many more.
